Computerized Cognitive Training for Insomnia (COGMUSE)

Advantages

  • Gamified cognitive training that is aimed at adults with both autism and insomnia
  • Flexibility in terms of the ability to incorporate user feedback

Summary

Older adults with insomnia as well as autistic adults with co-occurring insomnia often struggle with persistent cognitive and sleep disturbances. These issues are only marginally mitigated with existing pharmacological treatments or generalized cognitive training programs.

COGMUSE is a novel game-based computerized cognitive training platform for older adults with insomnia. It employs computerized titration to adjust difficulty and content based on each user's performance and feedback. Designed initially for older adults with insomnia and extended to autistic adults, it incorporates two main games, “Star Snatcher” and “Worse for Wire,” which target spatial attention, perceptual motor skills, processing speed, and inhibition. A music engagement “booster” task precedes each training session to enhance the overall benefits. Iterative feedback has guided improvements to interface design, instructions, and navigation.

In a pilot study with 10 older adults with insomnia, COGMUSE was determined to be user-friendly and enjoyable. Future validation studies will explore COGMUSE’s impact on cognition and sleep outcomes in its target populations.
