Short Description
A novel avalanche-free single photon detector in the short infrared range that is suitable for ultra-sensitive high-density infrared imaging arrays
Abstract
Northwestern researchers have developed a novel avalanche-free single photon detector in the short infrared range that is suitable for ultra-sensitive high-density infrared imaging arrays. It supercedes existing single photon detectors and avalanche photodetectors on multiple levels. The pixel element is low voltage without a need for a large power source. It operates at near room temperatures and has almost negligible noise. Its ability to perform fast imaging using starlight-sensitive infrared photon counting arrays promotes a decisive advantage in many infrared imaging applications, particularly those related to homeland security and night time tactical maneuvers. In addition, this technology would improve the sensitivity of biomedical imaging if applied to high quality infrared imaging cameras.
