Background

The United States Pharmacopeial Convention has published the standard, USP 800, for handling hazardous drugs in healthcare settings. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that caregivers use an effective Closed System Transfer Device (CSTD) in order to minimize exposure to hazardous drugs and limit their adverse effects. The CSTD design mechanically prohibits the escape of fluid and vapors outside of its system. However, more than one CSTD is usually needed, and spillage occurs while changing devices. This is both unsafe for the nurse because of exposure to drugs, as well as the patient because the environment cannot be kept sterile. Frequent catheter manipulation can also cause trauma to the tissue. Therefore, there is a need for an improved transfer system.

 

Invention Description

A medical team at the University of Toledo has developed an innovative closed system for the safe handling of hazardous drugs. The team has designed and tested a prototype of their Onc-Med “Triple D” Urology Catheter for intravesical treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. It can Dispense, Dwell, and Drain hazardous drugs used in a clinical setting. It is a simple design that combines a three-way catheter stopcock with a standard Foley bag and tubing.  The device is intuitive and easy to use by caregivers and is discrete and comfortable for patients.
