The escalating issue of slow or non-healing wounds, particularly affecting diabetic individuals, older adults, and military personnel, is an issue that not only inflicts physical and emotional distress but also burdens the healthcare system. The intricacies of wound healing involve the timely formation of collagen fibers and the recruitment of stem and immune cells, crucial processes that, when impaired, lead to delayed healing, heightened infection risks, and increased scarring.
In response to the limitations of current approaches, our researchers present a novel solution, recognizing the pivotal role of microbiota in wound healing. Our inventors screened and developed the cellular components of dead probiotic bacteria, known as postbiotics, to enhance wound healing and improve skin health. This innovative strategy aims to harness the benefits of probiotics without the associated risks of live bacteria, presenting a distinctive solution in the realm of wound care.
