The Problem:
Pericardiocentesis is the definitive emergency treatment for tamponade. However, it remains a challenge for trainees because of the infrequent exposure to invasive neonatal and pediatric procedures. This technique can lead to serious complications if not performed correctly, including cardiac perforation and arrhythmia.
The Technology:
Simulation experts and clinicians at the University of Tennessee have designed an infant pericardiocentesis trainer that allows trainees to practice this life-saving technique in a safe environment, without the risk of injuring a patient. The internal anatomy provides the trainee with a realistic training platform, comparable to what they would see in the clinic. The incorporation of ultrasound-capable tissues allows for visual feedback when they aspirate from the trainer; the pericardium and myocardium have separate fluid ports. Users can practice the procedure repeatedly to improve their confidence in the procedure, thus improving patient outcomes.
Benefits:
• Realistic Anatomical Design
• Blind or Ultrasound-guided Pericardiocentesis
• Immediate Feedback of Needle Location (Pericardial vs. Intracardiac Colored Fluid)
