Diagnosis and Prevention of Fetal Heart Disease

Diagnosis and Prevention of Fetal Heart Disease

(CHMC Ref. Id: 2005-0303)

Overview:

This technology is a method for assessing the likelihood of the presence or formation of fetal heart disease, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), in a fetus by testing for the presence of anti-strep antibodies in the mother.

Applications:

  • Prenatal screening for fetal heart disease
  • Determination of monitoring and/or therapeutic course of action
Advantages:
  • Test can be performed on the mother prior to or in an early stage of pregnancy
  • Non-invasive
  • Provides an early screen to identify potentially high-risk fetuses that need close monitoring for diseases such as HLHS
  • Screening before pregnancy could allow for prophylactic intervention in the mother to significantly decrease or eliminate the development of anti-strep antibody-mediated structural abnormalities in a fetus.
