'Martin Irrigation Head' for Solid Set Flood Irrigation

This invention is a high flow bubbler sprinkler head and method for crop irrigation. The “Martin Irrigation Head” modifies existing solid-set sprinkler irrigation pipe by replacing the sprinkler with a new irrigation head with a modification at the base that can be used to divert water flow out of the sprinkler head or out the bottom for flood irrigation. This method applies floodwater via sprinkler heads on pipes arranged in a grid layout instead of a single source. Initial design testing showed this design improved solid set flood irrigation efficiencies by 80% over existing methods, resulting in more uniform irrigation, fertilizer distribution, and soil salinity control.

Background:
There are multiple methods for irrigating crops, such as flood irrigation which releases water from a series of ditches and gates, drip irrigation which releases water from a series of tubes or pipes, and sprinkler irrigation which distributes water through a series of pipes and spray heads to mimic natural rainfall. Irrigation changes inevitably affect the chemical composition and health of crop soil. Flood irrigation is used to remove salts in the soil, but it can be wasteful because of challenges with even distribution and over-soaking the ground near the gate. Drip and sprinkler irrigation allow for more even control of water distribution. The “Martin Irrigation Head” can convert a sprinkler head on solid-set sprinkler irrigation pipe into a high-flow bubbler, allowing water to seep into the ground to flood a field more uniformly, this design draws on the advantages of all different irrigation method types while also conserving water resources.
