Zwitterionic copolymers as surface modifying additives for marine fouling-release coatings
Case ID:
RFT-0726
Web Published:
1/30/2026
Block copolymers of poly(dimethylsiloxane) and monomers containing zwitterionic groups were synthesized and incorporated as additives in a polyurethane coating and evaluated for their ability to improve the coatings' fouling-release properties. Homopolymers of the zwitterionic monomers were also prepared and incorporated into the polyurethane coating for comparison. The zwitterionic additives were shown to create an amphiphilic surface on the coatings that aided in reducing the adhesion of fouling organisms.
Assessment of leachate toxicity of C. lytica.
BENEFITS
Most commercial fouling-release marine coatings are based on silicone elastomers. This means they are mechanically soft and require a tie coat to adhere to the primer. These coatings, on the other hand, are based on tougher polyurethanes and provide more durable fouling-release coatings.
APPLICATIONS
Ship hulls
Marine infrastructure (e.g., docks, underwater pipelines)
Submersible vehicles or equipment
