ZM523

ZM523 is an early-maturing open-pollinated maize variety (OPV) with white grain that is drought-tolerant and NUE, with resistance to GLS, MSV, and TLB, suitable for food use in tropical, rainfed, dry/wet mid-altitude and lowland ecologies in southern Africa and similar agroecologies.    General Information   Target region Southern Africa   Adaptation <1800 masl   Type of product Open-Pollinated Variety (OPV)   Year entered in Regional Trials 2005             Grain Characteristics Grain Yield   Grain color White Grain yield under optimum conditions 6.82 t/ha   Grain texture Semi-dent Grain yield under random stress 2.86 t/ha       Grain yield under MSV stress (ai) 7.31 t/ha   Biotic Stress Performance Grain yield under low N stress 1.62 t/ha   Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) (1-9)* 2.6 Grain yield under GLS & TLB (ai)  5.89 t/ha   Grey leaf spot (GLS) (1-9)* 2.0       Maize Streak Virus (MSV) (1-9)* 3.0 Agronomic Characteristics     Common rust (P. Actual performance will vary depending on a number of agronomic and environmental factors.

CIMMYT grants licenses to pursue varietal registration of OPVs to qualified public-sector partners. Following successful varietal release in a country, commercial licenses may be issued to private-sector partners by CIMMYT or the varietal registrant on a non-exclusive basis, subject to the terms of the license issued to the varietal registrant.

Private-sector partners interested in commercializing a CIMMYT-derived OPV in a country where the product has not yet been released are encouraged to approach a qualified public-sector partner who may apply to CIMMYT for a varietal registration license.
