Value Added Grains for Human Health

The FOODplus Research Cluster is a joint venture between the University of Adelaide and the Women's & Children's Health Research Institute. FOODplus aims to be a bridge between agriculture and human health by stimulating the research necessary to improve the nutritional intake and health of society.

The University of Adelaide Waite Campus is a centre of excellence for plant breeding and genetics and is the home of one of the largest integrated barley breeding and research programs in the world, the Pulse Breeding Australia national faba bean program and the southern node of the Australian Durum Wheat Improvement Program. Varieties from University of Adelaide programs dominate commercial crop production in South Australia and are widely grown elsewhere in Australia.

As part of the activities in FoodPlus, we are bringing together a portfolio of value-added grains (at various stages of development) to offer as research and commercialisation opportunities to food and nutrition companies.

High lutein wheat - yellow products with no artificial colours, may be beneficial for eye function

Very high amylose wheat - low GI

Hulless barley, novel starch, high β-glucan, low GI
