Executive Summary
Thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO) are used in a variety of applications such as automotive bumpers and fascia where good impact and chemical resistance are needed.. MSU researchers have recently developed a new technology for producing translucent TPO materials. The materials are compounded by conventional extrusion and then molded to produce a final article with high transparency, low haze and good mechanical properties. As a result, the material can be used to display messages underneath the substrate.
Description of the Technology
This invention involves a polyolefin formulation containing additional nano-sized additives and other ingredients. The formulation is prepared by standard compounding methods and can be molded, formed or shaped into various articles with varying thicknesses. Articles up to 3.2 mm have been molded and plaques up to 12”x8” formed. Typical light transmittance is up to 70%, haze as low as 16%.
