TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

New compositions of matter called “bistetracenes” have been invented. Bistetracenes are large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons prepared by a relatively simple and straightforward method. Derivatives are solution-processable, air stable, have low energy band gaps and high carrier mobilities, thereby overcoming the disadvantages of organic semiconductor materials currently used. Thus, bistetracene will enable the design of unconventional semiconductor compounds for use in high performance devices like organic solar cells and thin film transistors.

Bistetracene advantages over TIPS-Pentacene, which is currently used in marketed products:

  1. The mobility of Bistetracene is 6.1 cm2V-1s-1, which is higher than that of TIPS-pentacene (1.5 cm2V-1s-1), a benchmark material for organic transistor.
  2. Bistetracene exhibits better stability (about four times the half-life) than that of TIPS- pentacene under the same conditions.
  3. TIPS-pentacene rapidly undergoes Diels-Alder reactions with PCBM in solution to form mono- and bisadducts, which lead to ineffective photoinduced charge generation and separation for organic solar cells. There is no Diels-Alder reactions between PCBM and bistetracene. The excellent π-surface overlap and strong intermolecular interactions are favorable for forming one-dimensional stacks, allowing facile charge extraction from the solar cell devices.
