SHORT DESCRIPTION

A compact, self-contained device designed for biological specimen collection that ensures secure sample storage and controlled exposure for collection. Its dual-configuration mechanism supports safe transport and immediate processing in diverse settings.

BACKGROUND

Conventional filter paper-based methods for specimen collection often struggle with contamination risks, prolonged drying times, and safety issues for handlers. These challenges necessitate an improved system that maintains sample integrity while simplifying both collection and transport processes.

ABSTRACT

The invention presents a container for biological specimen collection comprised of a housing, an enclosure that is both pivotally coupled and slidably engaged with the housing, and a sample holder that receives a removable substrate. In its sealed configuration, the enclosure safeguards the substrate from contamination, while its open configuration exposes the substrate to the ambient environment for effective sample collection. Integrated with a built-in desiccant, the device preserves the sample immediately after collection, addressing common shortcomings associated with conventional methods and enhancing safety and efficiency in clinical as well as non-clinical settings.

APPLICATIONS

  • Safe and efficient blood collection from patients
    • Sampling in community and hospital settings for research and health screening.
    • At-home sample collection by individuals with minimal contamination risk.
  • Blood collection from farm animals
  • Collection of other diagnostic specimens, including saliva, urine, and breast milk.
  • Environmental sampling, including for household water quality testing and other environmental specimen collections.

ADVANTAGES

  • Self-contained design prevents contamination and ensures sample integrity.
  • Built-in desiccant integration enables sample preservation and transport.
  • Allows different types of filter paper to be used.
  • Ergonomic design enhances user control during specimen collection, improving overall sample quality.
