Residency BluePrint

A cloud-based, institution-specific residency advising and analytics platform that streamlines medical student guidance and improves residency match

Invention Summary:

Currently, no integrated, streamlined solution exists to guide students' decision-making about residency. Instead, students rely on forums, student-maintained databases, anecdotal data, peer experiences, and specialty-focused advice. Medical students lack an adequate, streamlined, and data-driven mechanism for guidance on residency application strategy.

Rutgers researchers have developed a cloud-based, institution-specific residency advising and analytics platform that streamlines medical student guidance and improves residency match outcomes using data-driven insights, called Residency Blueprint. Residency Blueprint is an integrated web-based decision support and analytics system designed to transform anonymous residency applications and match outcome data into actionable, institution-specific advising intelligence. By aggregating de-identified residency application data, academic performance, and match results, the platform leverages predictive analytics and interactive visualizations tailored for medical students and advisors. It supports evidence-based, cost-effective application strategies and adapts to evolving residency selection criteria, while enabling institutions to monitor outcomes, identify advising gaps, and drive continuous improvement.

Market Applications:

  • Medical schools seeking institution-specific residency advising solutions
  • Graduate Medical Education (GME) offices enhancing residency match success
  • Academic advisory platforms and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) integrating residency advising features
  • Medical education consortia and accreditation organizations supporting advising best practices
  • Health systems engaged in physician workforce planning
  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) licensing models for deployment across medical schools nationwide
  • Specialty-based advising and medical education platforms targeting residency application optimization

Advantages:

  • Centralizes and normalizes fragmented residency application and outcome data for institution-specific insights
  • Delivers predictive analytics to assess student competitiveness within specialties
  • Offers interactive visualizations tailored to the residency advising workflow
  • Supports HIPAA-compliant privacy and governance controls
  • Facilitates institutional assessment of curricular impact and advising effectiveness
  • Integrates with existing learning management and academic advising platforms as a scalable SaaS solution
  • Differentiates from competitors by combining proprietary data pipelines, analytics, and user-centered interfaces not currently available
