Repulpable Omniphobic Paper Packaging Solution

Executive Summary

Traditional grease- and water-resistant paper packaging solutions have significant environmental concerns. Water-resistant products using low-density polyethylene (LDPE) liners are not repulpable, increasing municipal waste footprint. Oil-resistance is often achieved using toxic per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which have been associated with various negative health outcomes, including cancer. MSU researchers are addressing these concerns through the development of a fully recyclable and repulpable fluorine-free omniphobic coating for paper packaging products.

Description of Technology

Our inventors use a single-step water-borne process where paper is coated with low cost, friendly materials. This coating has been demonstrated to exhibit considerable water and grease resistance in laboratory experiments. In addition, our inventors have demonstrated the ability to remove the coating/lining from the paper core, supporting a closed-loop packaging supply chain.

Key Benefits

  • No per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances
  • Fully repulpable paper core upon coating removal

Applications

  • Paper Food Packaging Products
