Recycled Thermoplastic Content Test

Determining Recycled Thermoplastic Content

Determining recycled thermoplastic content brochure

Need:

Plastic production and waste are a large and growing problem for this planet. Plastic production emits a large amount of greenhouse gases and plastics do not compose naturally. Consequently, they are filling up landfills faster than recycling plants can break them down. Recently, companies began marketing percentages of post-consumer plastic, claiming their product/packaging is partially composed of recycled materials. While these campaigns are raising awareness, and doing good for the global environment, there is no standard or method for determining whether these claims are true.

Solution:

The present invention provides a method and system to standardize and determine recycled plastic content. Through multiple types of analysis, including mechanical, spectroscopy, and calorimetry, various plastic polymers can be identified. This analysis can also be applied to determining recycled plastic content and virgin plastic content in a sample. By referencing a standard library for recycled plastic content, this system can rate and standardize ratios of recycled and virgin plastic within a sample.

Applications:

- Measure recycled plastic content in products

- Standardize recycled plastic claims

- Promote plastic reduction and recycling

Advantages:

- Standardizes existing claims and interests

- Can be implemented in multiple ways

- Builds company integrity

- Raises awareness of plastic pollution and overproduction
