Executive Summary
Plastic films are used extensively for packaging applications. Increasingly there are consumer, company and government demands for more recyclable products to minimize landfill waste. However, often recyclable products have poor mechanical or barrier properties and are not suitable for certain applications such as food packaging. Researchers at Michigan State University have recently developed a film technology that offers good barrier properties compared to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and is amenable to both chemical and physical recycling.
Description of the Technology
The technology is multilayer film comprising mostly polyester that contains a modified oxygen barrier. The extruded film has excellent transmission rates as well as good moisture barrier. The coextruded cast films are chemically and mechancially recyclable.
