Executive Summary
Modern vehicles rely on an extensive platform of sensors to ensure quality performance. For autonomous navigation, continuous knowledge of vehicle velocity is crucial, especially in challenging weather conditions. A recent development by MSU engineers helps address deficiencies of current velocity sensors through use of an innovative radar sensor, allowing for accurate three-dimensional velocity measurements in all-weather conditions.
Description of Technology
This technology improves upon traditional Doppler radar velocity sensors, by measuring the forward field of view along with the ability to measure lateral or vertical velocity. This is achieved through use of a novel interferometric radar transceiver. The proposed architecture allows for 3-D velocity measurements in the forward, lateral, and vertical direction. Proof-of-concept has been demonstrated.
