Researchers at the University of Arizona have applied a novel pseudo-phase conjugate technique to the design of a ghost-free and nearly aberration-free head up display. The Pseudo-phase conjugate Head-up Display (PHD) optical engine enables image transfer in an ultra-thin form factor with transparent devices which can be buried inside prescription glasses and sunglasses.
Background: In conventional HUDs, the optical medium through which the image information propagates is limited to free-space or image guide optics, employing total internal reflection. This requires relatively bulky displays that are difficult to be transferred to head-worn versions.
