Background
Pressure ulcers or bedsores form when there is a loss of circulation due to prolonged pressure at a point, such as on the heel of the foot. This occurs in immobile patients, such as those confined to a bed or wheelchair. A common way to prevent pressure ulcers is to change the position of the patient with the assistance of a caregiver. Devices have also been developed that shift pressure away from heel, but they create new pressure points at risk of developing into ulcers. Therefore, there is a need for a device that can continuously change the location of the pressure points.
Invention Description
Caregivers at the University of Toledo developed a pressure ulcer boot that continuously changes pressure points in a “rolling” motion. This is accomplished through an array of selectively inflatable and deflatable air pockets within the body of the boot.
