This invention is a device to assess platelet aggregation for diagnosis of thrombotic diseases and continual monitoring with anti-platelet therapy.
Background: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and, with over 50% of those deaths due to clot formation from myocardial ischemia and infarction. Anti-platelet therapies commonly used are aspirin, clopidogrel, and prasugrel. Monitoring anti-platelet therapy is currently not done on a routine basis due to a lack of a standardized definition of ineffectual anti-platelet therapy. With that said, there is a need for a widely-accepted point-of-care platelet function test that is reliable, accurate, and easy to use in clinics.
