A critical issue for IMD applications is authentication with wireless communications, since the current state of the technology provides pathways for an adversary to wirelessly change various IMD parameters and cause dangerous mistreatment of a patient. USF inventors have developed a defense mechanism that introduces a physical layer (PHY) authentication technique for IMDs. A friendly jamming mechanism is established and malicious attempts of adversaries are prevented. This is achieved without sharing any extra information such as secret keys, a vulnerability of existing methods of cryptology. In addition to ensuring authentication, the invention provides advantages in terms of decreasing processing complexity of IMDs and enhances overall communications performance. This invention will be a useful security addition to current IMD technology.
