Optically monitoring brain activities using 3D-aware head-probe
Case ID:
INV-18119
Web Published:
7/5/2020
INV-18119
Background
The field of brain imaging research presents an opportunity to develop one of the most advanced, target‑specific and accurate diagnostic methods for fully understanding disease mechanisms and pathways, including providing actionable information for tackling diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. However, state‑of‑the‑art neuroimaging technologies are limited in their practical applications.
Technology Overview
The proposed invention features a wireless, accurate and scalable neuroimaging technology.
The proposed optical brain imaging platform (AOBI) features a wireless, modular, fiberless and wearable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) head-gear device, highly-scalable 3D-aware flexible optical modules, and GPU-accelerated tomographic image reconstructions.
Compared to conventional fNIRS imaging systems, the proposed platform is several orders of magnitude lower in cost and weight, 5- to 10-fold better in contrast and 2- to 3-fold better in resolution. This wearable brain imaging platform will give researchers and clinicians access to advanced brain activities that are only apparent when measured in a natural environment.
