It has been a challenge to obtain primary, purple, or magenta colors in electrochromic (EC) devices from dark colors that are stable. In general the EC device contains dye which is electrochemically active but a higher oxidation or higher reduction potential could easily break the dye. Therefore, darker colors were not able to been synthesized earlier which limited the application of EC devices. With an ever growing demand for stable and lasting EC devices, it is imperative that an effective and dependable way to produce these items to be developed.
Our researcher has fabricated active one layer based EC device between the two conducting FTO coated glass plates, and designed a mechanism for coloration and decoloration of colored based EC device. This can widen the application of the EC device due to availability of color contrast between two colored states. Such enhancement will greatly improve the response time and lifespan of the device, therefore creating a bigger market for EC devices.
