A neck cooling device to selectively lower patient brain temperature after brain injury, providing protection from further injury.
This neck cooling device is a noninvasive way to lower brain temperature after stroke, traumatic brain injury, heat exhaustion, or other brain conditions in order to protect the brain from further injury. This device works by wrapping around the neck and using circulating water to cool the neck and brain without needing to cool the entire body, unlike other current brain cooling technology. This device can be used on a patient immediately after head and brain injuries, including stroke, concussion, and heat exhaustion, in order to protect the patient’s brain. There are two main benefits this device presents over other brain cooling technologies. First, it does not cool the whole body, but rather it selectively cools the brain which eliminates the need to sedate the patient and reduces risks associated with whole body cooling. Secondly, it is a portable device which allows it to be brought to the patient directly, reducing the time between injury and brain cooling, and has the potential to be used not only in the hospital setting but also in an ambulance, on the sidelines of a sports game, or in the military.
