Unmet Need: Improved electrolytes for solid-state batteries
Solid-state batteries show a great potential for practical application in energy storage devices. However, the ionic conductivity and interfacial properties of solid -state electrolytes still need to be improved for the wide commercialization of solid-state batteries due to insufficient ionic conductivity, narrow electrochemical stability window, poor mechanical robustness, poor compatibility with metal anodes, and instability under ambient atmosphere.
The Technology: Metal–organic frameworks based solid-state electrolytes
WSU researchers present metal–organic framework (MOF) based solid-state electrolytes. These electrolytes are prepared by infiltrating metal salts in nano-sized metal-organic frameworks, followed by mixing with binder.
