SHORT DESCRIPTION
This invention presents a synthetic melanin formulation that incorporates viscosity modifying agents to enhance the adhesion and polymerization of hair dye precursors. The resulting formulation yields long-lasting and tunable hair coloration suitable for both salon and at-home applications. BACKGROUND
Conventional hair dye formulations often face challenges such as run-off and inconsistent pigment deposition, which can compromise coloration durability. By utilizing solution-thickening agents, this technology increases viscosity to promote greater adherence of synthetic melanin precursors to human hair, thereby addressing common application hurdles and improving overall hair dyeing performance. ABSTRACT
The technology includes methods and materials for nontoxic, biocompatible, optionally metal-free, and tunable hair coloration through the development of a synthetic melanin formulation. In this process, hair is treated with artificial melanin precursors that have been mixed with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a solution-thickening agent. Different colors can be achieved by tuning reaction conditions such as temperature and solution phase composition. This approach results in a streamlined application process that is safe and adaptable for professional salon treatments as well as convenient at-home usage, while also offering the ability to tune color outcomes. IP STATUS
5 mg/mL of dopamine polymerized in water or 5 mg/mL of the following thickeners and 3% NH4OH: hyaluronic acid, hydroxyethylcellulose, sclerotium gum, xanthan gum. The solution was either unheated or heated to 40° C. The polymerization was left to go for two hours before the hair was washed with water and shampoo.
