Lifting Tether

Background: To support launch and recovery operations, the diameters of remotely operated vehicle (ROV tethers have been increased to accommodate higher load-bearing capacities. However, this increase in tether diameter necessitates the use of larger on-deck equipment, such as bigger winches. These larger systems require more valuable deck space, thereby expanding the on-deck footprint. Additionally, larger tethers can negatively impact ROV performance: they introduce increased drag, consume more power, and limit the ROV’s maneuverability.

Technology Overview: The ROV Lightweight Lifting Tether is a flexible, high-performance marine tether designed to enhance load-bearing capacity while maintaining a compact diameter to reduce the on-deck footprint. In addition to transmitting data, the Lifting Tether increases load-bearing strength by enclosing the cable in a lightweight sleeve, which provides added support during launch and recovery operations. Its smaller size helps manage torsional forces and minimizes strain on the ROV. The ROV Lightweight Lifting Tether seamlessly combines the advantages of a small, lightweight design with the necessary strength to efficiently launch, manage, and recover valuable ROVs in deep-sea missions.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced load‑bearing capacity: Supports heavier loads during launch and recovery operations
  • Compact design: Minimizes diameter, reducing the on-deck footprint and saving valuable deck space
  • Increased efficiency: Minimizes strain and drag on the ROV, improving maneuverability
  • Optimized power usage: reduces power consumption by decreasing tether drag

Applications:

  • Deep‑sea exploration
  • Marine research
  • Subsea construction and installation
  • Offshore oil and gas
