Intramedullary Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Implant

A novel TMJ implant that reduces stress and strain on the patient. Background: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is involved in functions such as chewing, swallowing, and speaking. Degenerative disorders of the TMJ are typically treated with anti-inflammatory drugs. However, once the TMJ has been compromised, surgical treatment is commonly performed. Current TMJ implants typically mimic the "ball and socket" design of prosthetic hip implants. The fixation screws of current TMJ implants transmit loads from the implant to the mandible bone and are the points where the maximum von Mises stresses are found. High stresses on the screws fixing the mandibular component to the mandible commonly lead to failures of TMJ implants. As a result, there is a need for better implants and methods for TMJ treatment that adequately support these stresses and loads. Technology Overview: This SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University technology provides intramedullary mandibular implants for the temporomandibular joint. The mandibular implants include a stem portion, a collar portion, and a head portion. The head portion provides an articulating surface with a fossa or a fossa component. The collar portion forms a channel between an interior surface of the collar portion and an exterior surface of the stem portion. In use, the stem portion may be implanted within a condyle of a mandible such that an end portion of the condyle is situated within the channel of the implant and the head portion articulates with the fossa or fossa component, reducing the nail/wedge effect on the remaining cortical bone.  Applications: The primary application for this technology is treatment for TMJ. Intellectual Property Summary: This technology is covered by the patent US 20200093602A1, Temporomandibular joint implants and methods of treating a temporomandibular joint.Licensing Status This technology is available for licensing and will be of value to any company or institution involved in treating TMJ.
