This technology is a series of innovative small molecules demonstrating significant in-vitro anticancer activity. Isolated from a previously unstudied medicinal plant species, these compounds expand the potential of natural products in drug discovery. Previous studies on related plant species have identified compounds with a broad spectrum of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and neuroprotective effects, suggesting these plants may be an important source of new therapeutic compound. The use of compounds from plants with a long history of medicinal use may enhance the potential for identifying successful therapeutic agents.
In 2022, 20 million new cases of cancer were reported worldwide, and 9.7 million cancer deaths were reported. Existing cancer drugs often face limitations such as severe side effects, drug resistance, and high production costs, highlighting the urgent need for alternative therapies like those derived from natural sources. There is a need for new cancer therapeutics with minimal side effects and lower production costs to combat these devastating diseases.
