Summary:

Research has been done on shaping electromagnetic radiation in the time and frequency domain via the adequate design of waveform, pulse shaping, and filtering to control self and multi-user interference at the transmitter and receiver ends, but energy leakage is considered a significant problem, degrading the overall system performance. Researchers at the University of South Florida have worked out this problem with a novel concept of using Ambient backscatter communication (ABC).  Electromagnetic radiation is controlled over a region by using multiple ABC nodes in sync. This demonstrates the mutual usage of ABCs for electromagnetic energy shaping in existing radio systems. The use of ABC allows a shaped wave in the spatial domain analogous to wave shaping in the time-frequency domain. Multiple coordinated ABCs can be used to create radiation rejection zones for primary user usage.
