This invention upgrades a handheld ground-penetrating radar (GPR) by adding augmented reality (AR) mapping and multi-sensor capabilities to make subsurface detection more accurate and easier to visualize.
The new system improves on a traditional handheld continuous-wave GPR by integrating AR and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) technology. This means users can see a 3D map of what’s underground, projected right into their AR headset, making it much easier to locate and record buried objects like pipes or cables. The AR upgrade also fixes common problems with false signals caused by uneven heights or reflections. Adding a second CW radar unit allows for multi-static radar imaging, which can detect objects even when they’re hidden behind others. It can also measure Brewster angles to better understand soil composition. Altogether, this upgraded GPR makes underground detection more precise, reliable, and accessible to professionals in the field.
