Close Range PET

This invention involves moving the detector ring of a PET system closer to the patient while improving the spatial resolution and reducing the blurriness of resulting images. By moving the detector module closer, the quantity of samples tested, and the solid angle covered by the scanner are increased.

Background:
Currently, PET system’s sensitivity is very limited and has poor spatial resolution. With these problems comes longer scan times and inaccurate diagnoses which can affect the lives of patients. PET scanners are mostly used for cancer, brain disorders, and heart condition diagnosis.

Applications:

  • This technology can be applied to most PET scanners and is best used in diagnosis of:
    • Cancer
    • Brain disorders
    • Heart conditions
    • Epilepsy

Advantages:

  • Larger solid angle covered
  • Less detector molecules needed
  • Higher spatial images
