BACKGROUND

Northwestern University Scientists have developed a potential therapeutic to treat advanced stage cancers. It has been shown that in cancer cells, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes histone H3.1. Removal of this hydrogen perioxide from the nucleus of cancer cells with NLS-catalase protected H3.1 was shown to maintain H3.1-decorated chromatin and suppress the epithelial to mesenchymal transition, a process which promotes the evolution of metastatic and chemoresistant cancer cells. This therapeutic has been shown to eliminate metastatic tumors in mice models.
