Adaptive Wavefront Control System for Simulating Vision Correction

This device is an augmented/virtual reality system designed to assist patients suffering from visual impairments like cataracts and corneal scars. It has two modes: augmented reality (AR) mode in which it analyzes the scattering of light caused by a patient’s eye impairment and corrects for that scattering providing real-time vision corrects, and simulation mode, in which it assists in the selection of a treatment plan by simulating the vision of a patient after various potential surgical and non-surgical treatment options.

The first functionality offers significant quality of life improvements for patients whose conditions are inoperable. For patients planning to pursue surgery, the second functionality will allow patients to “test-drive” their post-treatment vision, making it possible for them to make informed decisions on every detail of their treatment. 

Background: 
Cataracts are cloudy areas that form on the lens of the eye. They affect the vision of 24.4 million people in the United States alone. Currently, vision correction options are limited for patients with cataracts, and surgery is the primary treatment pathway. This technology could change approaches to the treatment of cataracts and improve the quality of life of cataracts patients.
