SHORT DESCRIPTION A method to synthesize hierarchical organic-inorganic polymers using electrospinning methods
ABSTRACT Northwestern researchers have developed an innovative process to 3-D print organic fibers in an inorganic gel, yielding hierarchical and biomimetic composites. The electrospun organic fibers embedded in an amorphous organic gel matrix offers an architecture with toughening mechanisms. For example, upon loading, the organic fibers uncoil, stretch, and rotate, thereby absorbing and dissipating mechanical energy. Yet, the composites are lightweight and have multifunctional usage. These woven composite materials are highly attractive for aerospace and automatic applications.
