3D-Printable Modules for Water Membrane Filtration Education
Case ID:
M25-177P
Web Published:
3/3/2026
Invention Description
Water is fundamental to sustainable development, acting as a crucial element for human survival, economic growth, energy, food production, and a healthy ecosystem. When more water is withdrawn from the ecosystem than is replenished, the risk for depletion and long-term damage to aquifers and that ecosystem is increased. Thus, it is critical to educate future generations about proper water care and conservation.
Researchers at Arizona State University have developed a novel activity to help students understand the importance of water treatment and conservation. This activity offers an educational approach that uses cost-effective, adaptable 3D-printable modules to simulate membrane filtration processes to teach students how membrane technologies work and contribute to producing clean potable water. Designed for learners ranging from K-12 students to the general public, the modules provide tangible, interactive experiences to enhance understanding of water treatment concepts, membrane selectivity, and permeability. It integrates STEM principles and addresses challenges like fouling and scaling, promoting critical thinking and sustainable water management awareness.
These interactive 3D-printed models facilitate hands-on learning of advanced water membrane filtration processes and address educational challenges in conveying complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences.
